Since its inauguration nearly two decades ago, Thailand Government Complex (TGC), has struggled with a lack of public transit connectivity, car-dependency, and traffic congestion. In 2024 with the arrival of the Skytrain, Landprocess reimagined TGC as a resilient, inclusive urban hub. By prioritizing public connectivity for 37,500 daily users, the redesign emphasizes low-carbon design, walkability and nature-based infrastructure, reducing car reliance and promoting a climate-resilient, healthy workspace. Aligned with Thailand鈥檚 and global net-zero goals, TGC sets a new benchmark for sustainable government development.
The redesigned TGC experience begins with the 200-meter elevated Skywalk that creates a seamless link to the new Skytrain station and transforms an underutilized rooftop parking garage into a vibrant and welcoming plaza. Breaking away from traditional, sterile government aesthetics, this versatile space is designed at a human-scale, fostering an inviting atmosphere, and enriching the complex鈥檚 social, environmental, and cultural identity.
The 1,500-vehicle parking structure is designed as rainwater-harvesting architecture, featuring an urban farm rooftop and a green fa莽ade with cascading rain chains and vertical planters. This blue-green infrastructure reduces runoff, mitigates flood risks, improves air quality, and provides natural cooling. Harvested rainwater is stored in underground tanks, ensuring sustainable water use. Elevated to prioritize people over cars, the upper plaza seamlessly connects to the lower plaza, hosting community activities and fitness events, while an underneath EV station improves campus-wide accessibility.
Transforming the road network into cooling corridors, integrating green walkways, pedestrian-friendly streetscapes, rain gardens and reducing vehicle lanes. Adding 3,500 trees and 30 acres of new green space strengthens the Complex鈥檚 environmental resilience and inclusivity. Underutilized green are revitalized into productive health parks, including pocket parks and multi-purpose walkways that double as running tracks, promoting social interaction, physical well-being, and biodiversity.
TGC transformation demonstrates how government spaces can lead by example, seamlessly blending sustainability, functionality and adaptation design. This reimagined campus sets a new benchmark for governmental role in balancing environmental resilience, community engagement, and efficient governance. Aligned with the nation鈥檚 climate objectives, TGC serves as a blueprint for Bangkok and beyond, addressing climate challenges while fostering a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient urban future.
